Graphic proposal for a street museum and architetural intervention in the Liberdade neighborhood.

Choosing Rua dos Aflitos as the location for our intervention reflects the historical and cultural significance that the Liberdade neighborhood—and more specifically, Rua dos Aflitos, the birthplace of the Capela dos Aflitos—plays in the community. Over the years, the neighborhood, the street, and the chapel have witnessed the richness of Afro-Brazilian heritage, with its cultural influences deeply rooted. With this in mind, our project aims to preserve and celebrate this heritage by renovating the chapel and façades, creating spaces for socializing and leisure, while simultaneously honoring the history of the community and removing elements that do not represent its culture. Through the restoration of Rua dos Aflitos, we seek to ensure that this rich cultural narrative is not erased but instead revitalized and shared with future generations. The decision to transform Rua dos Aflitos into a welcoming community space with benches, tree structures, and a street museum with access to the Capela dos Aflitos—a symbol of religious devotion and the resilience of the local Black community—is a step aimed at preserving and highlighting the cultural and historical significance of the location. Closing the street will allow the creation of an inviting, safe, and accessible public space for both the local community and visitors. This will not only provide a peaceful environment conducive to appreciating Afro-Brazilian heritage but will also establish an excellent location for cultural, educational, and leisure activities. By integrating the street museum and the Capela dos Aflitos into this restored environment, our intervention seeks to solidify the community's history, promoting knowledge and celebrating local traditional cultures, making it a significant milestone in preserving and revitalizing the community's history, ensuring that its story is not erased.
